Twitter for Boomers

I spent a lot of time yesterday working on my LinkedIn profile trying to make it look more professional. In addition to editing my account I also decided to add some friends from college or as LinkedIn refers to it, “connecting.” It’s amazing to think that just 20 years ago there was almost no way to really keep in contact with all your friends from school other than email. Today, it is easier than ever before to connect with old friends through social media. While fixing up my profile, I decided to catch-up and see what my friends from college were up to. I ended up looking at a bunch of accounts and stumbled upon a friend from college that I hadn’t seen since senior year. To put it in perspective, the last time I saw this guy was at a party and he was beyond earthly levels of intoxication with two 40 ounce bottles duck taped to his hands. Now, he’s an intern for a wealth management firm. Isn’t social media wonderful?

Speaking of social media, I want to talk about an underrated semi-underground app that a lot of people seem to ignore. The Nextdoor app is a social media service that acts as a way for neighbors to inform each other about happening around their community. It’s like Twitter, but for boomers. Riveting, isn’t it? On the surface this looks boring, but if you dig deep enough you’ll come across some gems. My neighborhood is nothing special. You won’t find anything fun in terms of drama. It’s mostly people selling lawn equipment, complementing each other’s gardens, with the occasional neighbor asking “we’re those gunshots or fireworks?”

The best content comes from other neighborhoods where you can tell the neighbors are petty about every little thing. these are usually the areas where they have a home owners association that gets frustrated when you don’t have the same cookie-cutter, gray, plastic mailbox that everyone else has. It’s incredible to see how many people show their true colors on this app despite it not being an anonymous forum. There’s little to no anonymity because you have to sign up using your actual address, and everyone can see your address when you comment on a post. That’s why when I signed up I just used the address of a house that was for sale in my neighborhood and created a fake name. I have yet to comment on any posts. I have been starved of entertainment lately; maybe I should start using my account.

I couldn’t think of what to write about this week, so this was the result. Thank you for reading and if there’s anything you’d like to see me write about in the future, let me know in the comments below.
